Paine Falls & Indian Point Park – Lake County Ohio

Earlier last week we stopped by Paine Falls and Indian Point Park, both part of the Lake Metroparks system in Lake County Ohio. The weather had been rainy at the time, and the rains got much heavier  as the week progressed. There were flood warnings there over the weekend,  and Seely Road, which leads into Indian Point Park, is reportedly closed right now due to damage from the high water. We plan to go back when the weather gets sunnier and drier, but here are a few pictures of the area that I took last week.

The West Side Market

We’re in a streak of rainy weather here, making things rather unpleasant for outdoor photography. It was the perfect day for a trip to Cleveland’s West Side Market for some fresh bread, fresh pasta, and a few other goodies. Oh, and I took a few photos and a video (at bottom) too.(Click on any image for a larger view.)

Mute Swans, A Cardinal, A Heron

I was sunny yet a little cool today, perfect for a walk around one of the local parks. I saw a pair of mute swans hanging around the pond - I think they were waiting for a handout. While walking, I was joined by a male northern cardinal who seemed to follow me everywhere. I also was surprised by a Great Blue Heron, who was standing close to the shore, hiding in the tall grasses.

Mute Swan At Veterans Park

Yesterday, after we saw the Long Tailed Duck at Mentor Headlands, we walked around Veterans Park (also in Mentor) and saw a large mute swan taking a leisurely swim around the pond . Here’s a photo!

Long Tailed Duck at Mentor Headlands

Today, my husband and I were walking at Mentor Headlands State Park, on the dunes trail leading to the lighthouse. A few birders gave us a heads up that there was a long tailed duck sitting by a log on the shore closer to the lighthouse. When we got to the location the duck was still there, although it was very hard to spot at first, being perfectly camouflaged by the colors of the pebbly beach. We are fairly certain this is an adult female as it does not have a long tail!

This duck is not normally spotted in this area, so we’re so thankful that those other birders tipped us off to this rare find!
