Icy Trees and a Northern Cardinal

It may be spring but that doesn’t mean that the wintery weather has ended. A thunderstorm moved through yesterday and brought in much colder air. After having some hail, the rain changed to sleet and the trees got a light coating of ice. It wasn’t much to see until this morning, when the sun came up and the ice that coated the branches the day before sparkled like thousands of diamonds. While I was outside taking photos of the icy branches, I also caught a photo of the setting moon, plus pictures of a male northern cardinal that was calling out loudly from one of the trees. Here are the photos. (Click on any image for a larger view.)

A Glowing “Super Moon”

Last night we saw the “super moon” - where the moon was closer to earth than it’s been in over 18 years. It was reportedly the biggest full moon of 2011, and the next super moon will not occur again until 2016. But to my camera and to my eyes, the moon really didn’t look any bigger than normal. Still, it was nice to be able to grab a picture - even though the sky was not completely clear, giving the moon a bit of a fuzzy glow.

A Cooper’s Hawk Hangs Out

A few days ago we had a pair of red shouldered hawks in the yard. Yesterday evening, a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk decided to hang out for a while in one of our maple trees. It had its feathers ruffled for several minutes, but then seemed to settle down to pose for a decent picture.

Red Shouldered Hawks Pay A Visit

A pair of red shouldered hawks stopped by the back yard yesterday for a short visit. They were kind enough to wait until I got my camera and posed for a few photos (below). Enjoy!
