Fascinating Frosty Fractals

The one good thing about brutally cold weather is the frost that forms on some of our garage windows. I really enjoy the fractal patterns that form as the frost expands, and the rainbow colors that sometimes appear if the sun hits the frost just right. Here are a few photos taken yesterday – some of the frost patterns look like ferns.

If you’d like to see some of the other frosty fractal photos I’ve taken in the past, they are at the following links:

Innerbelt Bridge Winter Time Lapse

Here is a short, wintery-looking time lapse video that I took of the Cleveland Ohio Innerbelt Bridge on I-90. The video is from footage taken on January 20-21, 2011.

Sparrow In An Icy Landscape

I’m finally getting caught up on some photos taken in December. When we visited Edgewater Park a few weeks ago to take photos of Cleveland’s West Harbor lighthouse encased in ice (see “Cleveland Lighthouse Becomes an Ice Castle”), I also tried to photograph a few sparrows hanging out on the ice formations on the shore. I managed to photograph one sparrow as it attempted to land on the odd icy “structures” created by spray from Lake Erie onto the grasses and shrubs on the shoreline. Here are the photos – one with the ice in full view, the other highlighting the bird still in flight. I don't think the bird was successful in landing on its first try.
