Early Spring At Veterans Park, Mentor Ohio

It was brisk outside today but at least it was sunny, so we decided to head out to Veterans Park in Mentor, Ohio to see what kinds of birds and waterfowl were visiting the area. We saw the ubiquitous Canada geese, all of them in a feisty mood. There were also quite a few mallards out and about, and they were being very protective of their nesting areas. At least the mallards seemed friendlier and actually seemed to come up very close and pose for some pictures. The geese, however, were best photographed from afar today. Here are a few photos:

Fiery Spring Sunrise

It’s the first full day of spring, and we were treated to a very colorful, fiery sunrise. I ran outside to take a quick picture, and the color disappeared within about a minute of this photo.

The First Day Of Spring

Finally, the first day of spring! It’s sunny and bright outside with plenty of blue sky, but the temperatures are still cold. It was a perfect day to catch a nice shot of a neighbor’s huge sycamore tree. The whitish bark towards the top really stands out when there are no leaves on the tree and the sky is bright blue. Enjoy the photo!

A Marsh Hawk Visits

A female marsh hawk – also known as a northern harrier – made a visit to our yard today. It was pouring rain at the time, and the bird was soaked. It was sitting in a tree for quite some time, long enough for me to get the camera set up to take a picture. Of course, the minute I am ready to take the shot, she flies a little farther off, making for an even more difficult shot, considering all the rain and trees between the hawk and me. Still, I managed to get one picture before it began raining so hard that a clearer picture would not possible.

Our White Winged Crossbill Returns

As I wrote in my blog yesterday, we had a new feathered visitor come to our backyard bird feeder yesterday, a female white winged crossbill. She was quite camera shy yesterday. But to our surprise when she returned today, she actually allowed me to get fairly close to the bird feeder so I could capture a quick shot with my point-and-shoot camera. She posed for me very nicely, before deciding to fly back to the pine trees. Enjoy the photo!
