Bitter Cold Brings Beautiful Frost

The bitter cold temperatures really have a grip on a large part of the country. The upside is that the frost patterns change daily showing their various fractal patterns. Based on the sunshine – or lack of it – the patterns can sparkle with beautiful colors or they can look like black and white pictures. Here are some photos taken this past weekend and this morning.

Sub-Zero Frosty Fractals

The recent Polar Vortex brought record low temperatures here (-11 degrees) for two days. My garage windows sometimes get frosted when it is extremely cold, and I enjoy seeing the frost form their fractal patterns and sparkle in the sunlight. Here are photos of the frost, with a little bluish background color from the snow on the ground outside.

Fascinating Frosty Fractals

The one good thing about brutally cold weather is the frost that forms on some of our garage windows. I really enjoy the fractal patterns that form as the frost expands, and the rainbow colors that sometimes appear if the sun hits the frost just right. Here are a few photos taken yesterday – some of the frost patterns look like ferns.

Frosty Fractals, Part 2

It got down to about 9 degrees last night, so the conditions were good for some frost to form on our garage windows. The sky was also very clear today, which provided some nice bright light in order to get the full effects of the intricate frost. I always enjoy the sparkling fractal patters that form in the frost. Sadly, the sparkle doesn’t translate very well with the camera, but the patterns are clearly visible by just adding a little more contrast to the picture, and adding a solarizing effect.
