A Great Blue Heron Goes Fishing

We took a stroll in Mentor’s Veterans Park this weekend and were rewarded by seeing a great blue heron (I believe it is a juvenile) standing on the dock, along with several people who were fishing. I assume the heron was doing some fishing of its own. It stood very still and allowed me to get very close and seemed completely unfazed by the others fishing (who were also making a lot of noise). Great blue herons are quite large birds – this one was at least 4 feet tall. Here are a few photos.

A Great Blue Heron, Beautiful Scenery, Pleasant Weather!

It was a beautiful day – blue skies, comfortable temperatures – so I decided to head out to one of our local parks to catch some of the beautiful scenery and enjoy the weather. The light was just right and made for some interesting, abstract-looking photos of the lily pads on one of the ponds.

There was also a Great Blue Heron that dropped in to do some fishing, and despite the fact that a large group of kids from the nearby school descended on the area, the heron seemed indifferent to all the noise. In fact, it let me get close enough for some nice photos. (While the heron looks large an imposing when viewed from the side, it looks rather spindly and delicate when viewed face on.)

Feisty Mallards, Canada Geese At Veterans Park

The weather is still nice and unseasonably warm here today, so I decided to take a stroll in Veterans Park (Mentor, OH) to see what the birds were up to. The big pond is still covered with quite a bit of ice, and all that seemed to be out (besides a few people walking their dogs) were bunches of testy Canada Geese and Mallards hanging out in the few small areas of open water. Here are a few photos.

Early Spring At Veterans Park, Mentor Ohio

It was brisk outside today but at least it was sunny, so we decided to head out to Veterans Park in Mentor, Ohio to see what kinds of birds and waterfowl were visiting the area. We saw the ubiquitous Canada geese, all of them in a feisty mood. There were also quite a few mallards out and about, and they were being very protective of their nesting areas. At least the mallards seemed friendlier and actually seemed to come up very close and pose for some pictures. The geese, however, were best photographed from afar today. Here are a few photos:
