Snow melt and heavy rain caused many of the area rivers to exceed flood stage. At about 3:15 on February 7, 2017, the river gauges showed the Chagrin River in Willoughby, Ohio at 12.89 feet. Daniels Park in Willoughby was closed off due to the high water, so we headed to Chagrin River Park, which has higher banks and a walking bridge over the river for safe viewing of the rushing waters. Here is a short video plus two photos taken while the water level was probably at or near its peak.

Chagrin River Park: Man-Made Beauty
The sun finally came out after what seemed like an endless streak of gloomy weather. We decided to take a walk in Chagrin River Park, which is part of the Lake Metroparks. There was still plenty of snow cover so there wasn’t much to see except a frozen Chagrin River, bare trees, and dormant vegetation. I decided to try to find something visually interesting in the man-made scenery in and around the park. The pedestrian bridge makes for a nice view of the Chagrin River, but it was the bridge itself that stood out from all the ice and snow. The stairs to the sledding area brought some visual interest to the blank white of the hill. And, the nearby towers for the high tension power lines looked like metal giants walking through the cold, open space. Here are a few photos.

Finding Color in a Wintery Landscape at Chagrin River Park
We’ve had an unusually long stretch of bitter cold temperatures, coupled with lots of snow. Even though there isn't much to see outside but mostly white scenery with bare trees, one can still find color in the landscape. Here’s a photo I took a few weeks ago at Chagrin River Park. There was a massive ice jam on the Chagrin River and the river was nearing flood stage. (I believe the park was closed the next day.) One nearby area was filling with slightly muddy and icy water which reflected both the pale color of the sky and the dormant grasses. It looked surreal to say the least, but at least it brought a touch of color to an otherwise bleak landscape. (Click on image for a larger view.)
